On Monday the Supreme Court removed a critical obstruction from President Trump’s effort to restore elementary safeguards to the handling of mail-in ballots through the United States Postal Service. The justices’ action permits the administration to advance a policy requiring the Postal Service to examine outgoing ballot envelopes for compliance with federal requirements before accepting them for delivery. This is neither an innovation nor an overreach; it is the application, to the most consequential civic transaction of all, of the same elementary fraud protections the Postal Service already imposes upon every bank, charity, corporation, and government agency that entrusts its business to the mails.

There is no coherent principle under which state election offices should enjoy a special exemption from the verification standards that bind every other user of the postal system. When a commercial enterprise submits bulk mail, the Postal Service demands adherence to addressing rules, postage requirements, and content restrictions precisely because the integrity of the system depends upon them. To insist that ballots—documents that determine the composition of Congress and the direction of the Republic—should travel under a lighter standard is to invert the hierarchy of civic seriousness. The claim that such scrutiny constitutes an assault upon the franchise is rhetoric designed to obscure the plain fact that unverified ballots are invitations to abuse.

The Court’s decision therefore does more than clear a procedural path; it reasserts a basic equality before the law of the mails. If the Postal Service may refuse a poorly prepared commercial mailing or a non-compliant government notice, it may equally refuse a ballot envelope that fails to meet the modest federal criteria established to protect the vote itself. Anything less elevates administrative convenience and partisan convenience above the elementary duty to ensure that only lawful votes are carried and counted.
