Zelensky Defies Trump, Resumes Refinery Strikes as America First Demands End

Volodymyr Zelensky’s declaration that he will no longer honor the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump marks a decisive break with the American administration that has sustained his government through years of attrition. In an interview with the Financial Times published Thursday, the Ukrainian president stated plainly that “the block is out” and that Kyiv would resume drone strikes on Russian oil refineries, citing Moscow’s continued attacks on Ukrainian power infrastructure and what he described as a dangerous reduction in U.S. intelligence sharing. The move comes days after Trump unilaterally proclaimed an energy truce intended to stabilize global diesel markets and reduce American fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections. Zelensky’s refusal to accept unilateral American conditions, after a brief three-day pause, underscores the limits of Washington’s leverage once battlefield imperatives and domestic political pressures in Kyiv diverge from those in the White House.

The persistence of the conflict reflects the priorities of a broader coalition that has treated Ukrainian resistance as a permanent strategic asset rather than a finite war to be concluded. European capitals, certain technology and intelligence networks, and residual elements of the prior American foreign-policy establishment continue to underwrite Kyiv’s campaign even as the original objectives of regime change in Moscow or the recovery of all occupied territory recede. This alignment has insulated Zelensky from the necessity of compromise while externalizing the human and fiscal costs. For four years American resources, intelligence, and diplomatic capital have flowed into a theater whose boundaries and exit conditions remain undefined by any coherent American interest.

America First advocates have concluded that the war no longer serves the national interest. Continued support without reciprocal restraint on Ukrainian long-range strikes, or without a clear path to negotiation, imposes rising energy costs on American consumers and diverts attention from domestic reconstruction, border security, and the containment of Chinese power. The demand that Kyiv cease operations against Russian refineries is not an act of favoritism toward Moscow but an attempt to restore reciprocity and to reassert American priorities over those of a wartime government whose survival depends on external patronage. After years of open-ended commitment, the preference is for an armistice that ends the expenditure of American wealth and attention on a European conflict whose principal beneficiaries are no longer the American public.
