Anakin Skywalker returned from the Outer Rim campaigns to find the Jedi Council transformed into something he no longer recognized. The chamber that once answered to a single, austere tradition now seated a deliberate assemblage of species whose presence was explained less by mastery than by representation. Wookiee, Twi’lek, and Nautolan voices pressed for consultation where the war required decision; ancient prohibitions against attachment were quietly relaxed for favored lineages while enforced against the half-trained outsider who had actually fought. What the Council called inclusion Anakin experienced as the substitution of pedigree and grievance for competence. The Order that claimed to defend the Republic had begun to treat the Republic’s survival as one interest among many.
He watched the same body that had elevated him for his power now withhold the rank that power had earned, citing “balance” and “perspective” while Separatist fleets burned systems. The multispecies table did not merely fail to act; it treated decisive action itself as a moral failing. Attachment to a single polity, a single people, or a single victory was recast as the greater danger. Anakin, who had seen the cost of hesitation in the trenches, concluded that the Council’s new equilibrium was not wisdom but paralysis dressed as principle. The Force, once a standard of judgment, had been reduced to a shared resource whose proper distribution mattered more than its correct use.
The turn was not gradual. Once the Council’s composition and its doctrines were understood as a single project—an intentional dilution of authority in the name of every voice—Anakin judged the project incompatible with survival. Order, hierarchy, and the willingness to name an enemy became, in his mind, the necessary correction. He did not invent the Empire; he recognized in Palpatine’s offer the only remaining instrument capable of imposing the clarity the Council had abandoned. The fascist decision, as later ages would call it, was simply the refusal to accept that a governing body could remain legitimate while systematically disabling the very capacities required to govern.
