Recent Gallup polling reveals a stark partisan divide in American civic pride. In the June 2025 survey, a record-low 58% of U.S. adults said they were “extremely” or “very” proud to be American. Republicans maintained consistently high levels, with 92% expressing strong pride—continuing a long-term pattern where GOP identification with the nation has hovered in the 90% range for most of the past quarter-century.1036 This stability underscores a baseline attachment among conservatives that appears less conditional on momentary political outcomes.
Democrats, by contrast, show pride that correlates strongly with holding ideological and institutional power. Their numbers collapsed to just 36% in 2025, down sharply from 62% the prior year and representing one of the lowest points ever recorded for the group (the other occurring in 2020 during Trump’s first term).0 This pattern suggests that for many on the left, sentimental attachment to America intensifies when their preferred policies and cultural dominance are ascendant—such as during periods of unified Democratic control—and erodes when that grip loosens. The descent accelerated notably after Donald Trump descended the golden escalator in 2015, launched his insurgent campaign, and began challenging the established order, upending assumptions about elite consensus and national direction.
Today, Democrats alongside roughly half of Independents (at a new low of 53%) register the weakest national pride figures in Gallup’s multi-decade tracking.1 This reflects a broader dynamic where a significant portion of the left and center-left appears to view the country through a lens of conditional loyalty: pride flourishes under their stewardship but sours when power shifts away. The result is a polarized patriotism, with one major party maintaining near-universal attachment to the nation’s enduring idea and the other tying affection tightly to transient political control.
