Lame Duck Tillis Admits Opposing Trump and Entire GOP Agenda

Senator Thom Tillis has drawn significant attention for his recent public breaks with President Trump and parts of the Republican agenda. In interviews, including with Politico, the retiring North Carolina Republican—whose term ends in 2027—has voiced strong opposition to several Trump administration priorities and nominees. This includes blocking Ed Martin as a potential DC prosecutor over Jan. 6-related comments, threatening to oppose Attorney General nominees who equivocate on the Capitol events, and sharply criticizing a proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” at the Justice Department as “stupid on stilts” and a “payout pot for punks.”

Tillis, who announced his retirement after voting against Trump’s major 2025 tax-and-spending bill (“One Big Beautiful Bill”) over concerns about Medicaid cuts affecting North Carolinians, has positioned himself as more willing to buck the party line in his remaining time.19 He has also criticized Trump advisers like Stephen Miller and certain policy ideas, framing them as politically damaging ahead of midterms. Similar dynamics appear with other senators: Bill Cassidy (post-primary loss) has opposed elements like Iran policy extensions and funding proposals; John Cornyn faces a Trump-backed challenger in his primary; and Senate leadership under John Thune navigates thin margins amid internal tensions.

These episodes highlight ongoing fractures within the GOP conference despite unified control. Tillis and others argue their stands reflect institutional concerns, constituent impacts, or long-term electoral risks rather than blanket opposition to the broader agenda. Critics view it as classic lame-duck or “RINO” behavior undermining a fresh mandate. In a narrowly divided Senate, such independence can prove pivotal on nominations and must-pass legislation, testing whether policy unity or personal/principled differences prevail. Politics often involves these calculations, especially as reelection pressures fade for some.
