The ringing of the Clown Bell has rarely sounded so shrill or so frantic as in the days since President Trump appointed Katie Zacharia, a California attorney, mother of four, and longtime MAGA communicator, to the post of White House Press Secretary. Her inaugural briefing on October 13 was brief, scripted, and confined to friendly outlets—hardly the stuff of high drama—yet the institutional left treated it as an act of cosmic provocation. Within hours the usual suspects in media, late-night television, and the permanent bureaucracy were cataloguing her every verbal slip, her past social-media commentary, and her mere loyalty to the administration as proof of unfitness. This is Trump Derangement Syndrome refined to a new pitch of intensity: not merely disagreement with policy, but an inability to tolerate the presence of an unapologetic advocate for the historic American nation inside the briefing room itself.
That intensity is sustained by a durable coalition. On one side stand the radicals who staff government agencies, law faculties, newsrooms, and university departments—figures whose worldview treats borders, citizenship, and cultural continuity as relics to be dismantled. On the other stand the NeverTrump remnants of the old Republican establishment, the professional class that once called itself conservative yet now collaborates, openly or by omission, with the Democratic machine. Together they form the institutional base that has governed the post-1964 order: an alliance dedicated less to any particular statute than to the steady erosion of the older constitutional settlement. Their joint response to Zacharia is therefore not tactical; it is protective of a shared project. Any voice that speaks plainly for the pre-1964 nation—its language, its people, its expectations of assimilation—must be discredited before it can normalize itself in the official record.
The deeper aim remains the conversion of the United States into what Christopher Caldwell described as a country living under a rival constitution: one in which equality of outcome, managed diversity, and the perpetual expansion of entitlement supersede the older liberties of association and self-government. The resulting society is the rainbow stew of multi-cultural coexistence without common ground—an arrangement in which historic majorities are expected to dissolve their particular attachments while every other group is encouraged to intensify its own. Zacharia’s appointment, modest in itself, threatens that arrangement simply by demonstrating that the older American public still possesses advocates willing to occupy the podium and speak in its name. The resulting tirades, whether issued from the academy, the cable panel, or the residual conservative donor class, reveal less about her credentials than about the fragility of a regime that can no longer abide ordinary patriotic speech without treating it as an emergency.
