New U.S. Census Bureau figures confirm what many Lowcountry residents have observed firsthand: South Carolina is experiencing a massive wave of domestic migration, with retirees and families from high-tax liberal states pouring into the Palmetto State in record numbers.
According to recent reports, South Carolina ranked among the top states for net population gains last year, adding tens of thousands of new residents primarily from California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Many of these transplants are retirees cashing in on pensions earned in those states and seeking the milder climate, lower cost of living, and coastal lifestyle of the Lowcountry. Areas such as Charleston, Hilton Head Island, Myrtle Beach, and Beaufort have seen particularly heavy settlement.
Local observers note a troubling pattern: a significant portion of these newcomers supported the very progressive policies — high taxation, strict regulations, and expansive government programs — that made living in their home states increasingly unaffordable and undesirable. Having helped create the economic pressures they now flee, many are now retiring in South Carolina, raising concerns among longtime residents that they may import the same voting patterns and political attitudes that prompted their exodus in the first place.
City officials and community leaders in the Lowcountry say they are monitoring the rapid growth closely. While the influx boosts the local economy through increased housing demand and consumer spending, there are growing worries about infrastructure strain, rising home prices, and potential shifts in the state’s traditional conservative values. As one Mount Pleasant resident put it, “They left because it stopped working up there. We just hope they don’t try to recreate the same problems down here."
