Modern Governments And FakeNews Hate Christianity

On April 4, 2025, Russell Brand found himself at the center of a firestorm as U.K. authorities charged him with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault, stemming from alleged incidents between 1999 and 2005. Brand, who has reinvented himself as a vocal Christian convert since his baptism in 2024, swiftly denied the charges in a video on X, admitting to past struggles as a “drug addict, sex addict, and imbecile” but insisting he “never was a rapist.” The timing of these charges—coming just months after Brand’s high-profile embrace of Christianity and his alignment with conservative figures like Donald Trump—has fueled speculation among his supporters that this is a targeted attack. Posts on X reflect a sentiment among some that the allegations are suspiciously timed, with users suggesting that Brand’s newfound faith and his outspoken criticism of issues like the “Islamic invasion” of the U.K. have made him a target for those who oppose his beliefs.

The narrative of “FakeNews” weaponizing these charges to undermine Brand’s Christianity gains traction when considering his recent trajectory. Once a darling of the British left, Brand has shifted dramatically to the right, becoming a “Global Defender of Freedom” at a Mar-a-Lago gala in February 2025 and advocating for free speech and Christian values on platforms like Rumble, where he has over two million subscribers. His conversion, praised as genuine by figures like Bear Grylls, has been a lightning rod for criticism from progressive circles, who view his past behavior through a lens of moral judgment while dismissing his spiritual transformation. The allegations, first reported by The Times and Channel 4 in 2023, were reignited just as Brand’s influence among conservative and Christian audiences peaked, leading some to argue that the establishment media and legal system are colluding to silence a voice that challenges their secular worldview. This perspective, while popular among his base, overlooks the gravity of the accusations and the fact that the investigation predates his public conversion.

However, the theory that Brand is being targeted solely for his Christianity doesn’t fully hold up under scrutiny. The allegations, involving four women and spanning several years, were initially investigated following media reports in 2023—well before Brand’s baptism and his vocal support for Trump in late 2024. The Crown Prosecution Service, in announcing the charges, emphasized a careful review of evidence, and the legal process is bound by strict protocols to ensure fairness, as noted in their warning against prejudicial reporting. While Brand’s supporters may see a conspiracy, the timing could just as easily be coincidental, driven by the slow pace of legal proceedings rather than a coordinated attack on his faith. Still, the optics of a born-again Christian facing such charges in a climate of cultural polarization play into a broader narrative of persecution that resonates with his audience, amplifying their distrust of mainstream institutions and media—a distrust Brand himself has long cultivated.
