Pope Leo Promotes Lebanon Model, Dismisses Immigration Fears Critically

On December 2, 2025, aboard the papal plane returning from his visit to Turkey and Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV addressed concerns raised by some European Catholics who view Muslim immigration as a threat to the Christian identity of the West. When asked directly about these fears, the Pope acknowledged their existence but attributed them largely to opposition against immigration, stating: “I know that in Europe there are many times fears that are present, but oftentimes generated by people who are against immigration and trying to keep out people who may be from another country, another religion, another race.” He emphasized that his conversations with Muslims during the trip focused on peace and mutual respect, urging Westerners to “be a little less fearful” and promote dialogue, insisting that friendship between Christians and Muslims is possible.

Pope Leo pointed to Lebanon as a positive example of coexistence, highlighting stories of Christians and Muslims helping each other amid hardships and describing it as a country where “Islam and Christianity are present and respected, and where it is possible to live together, to be friends.” He suggested that such testimonies from Lebanon could serve as lessons for Europe and North America, reinforcing the value of interfaith bridges over exclusionary attitudes.

Critics, however, argue that citing Lebanon as a model ignores its profound challenges, including political paralysis, economic collapse, and the dominant influence of Hezbollah—an Iran-backed militia that operates as a state within a state, often described by observers as contributing to Lebanon’s status as a failing entity. Many contend that these realities underscore legitimate concerns about unchecked immigration and cultural integration, rather than mere bigotry, and that the Pope’s remarks risk downplaying threats to Europe’s historic Christian heritage in favor of an idealistic vision of harmony. Somebody, indeed, might need to educate the Holy Father on the ground truths in the very place he holds up as exemplary.
