Texas Raises a Seven-Million-Square-Foot Hall for Ten Million Robots

The steel is rising on the north campus of Giga Texas, and the pace is not the pace of a committee. Ground was broken in late March; the first beams stood in late May; by the first of October the basic frame was judged roughly two-fifths complete, with upper floors already poured while the skeleton still pushed toward the northern grade beam. What is going up is a dedicated Optimus plant, described by the observers who fly the site as more than seven million square feet, set beside the vehicle factory and sized for a long-term run of ten million humanoids a year. That is not a pilot line in a borrowed bay. It is a new industrial instrument, built on open ground so the process can be drawn for the robot rather than inherited from the car.

Ten million units a year is an ambition that rearranges the arithmetic of manufacturing. It is on the order of twenty-seven thousand machines a day if the line ever runs at the rate Tesla has named, a figure Elon Musk has repeated and that Ashok Elluswamy corrected upward in public. The first volume is not promised for tomorrow. Fremont is the nearer experiment, on floor space left when Model S and Model X left the building; Texas is the second-generation hall, with high-volume output aimed at 2027 and the shell still short of walls, utilities, and the machines that will have to fill it. The distinction matters. A steel frame is not a factory, and a design capacity is not a shipment. The country has watched too many ribbon-cuttings that never became output.

Even so, the sight is a rebuke to the habit of treating production as a press release. The American advantage, when it has existed, has been the willingness to pour concrete at a scale that makes the cautious flinch, and then to learn on the line rather than in the seminar. A plant of this size, if it reaches even a fraction of the stated rate, would put humanoid labor on the same footing as the automobile once occupied: not a curiosity, a commodity. Whether the actuators, the suppliers, and the software can bear that weight is the open question. The cranes are not waiting on the answer.
