The Alternative for Germany, formally designated a confirmed right-wing extremist organization by Saxony-Anhalt’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution, enters today’s Landtag election as the clear favorite to finish first. Polls released in the final days have placed the party near or above forty percent, nearly double its 2021 result and well ahead of the governing Christian Democrats. That arithmetic is no longer in serious dispute. What remains is whether the result will be merely the largest share or something closer to an outright majority should smaller parties fall short of the five-percent threshold. Either way, the voters of an eastern state that has lived under every German regime of the last century are poised to deliver a verdict the Federal Republic’s custodians spent decades insisting could never again be rendered.

The significance is not confined to Magdeburg. The entire postwar German settlement—its constitution, its schools, its public broadcasters, its commemorative calendar, its moral pedagogy—was constructed to make precisely this outcome unthinkable. A people educated from childhood in the unique guilt of the national past, schooled to treat any robust defense of borders or cultural continuity as a relapse, was supposed to have internalized the lesson so thoroughly that no party labeled extremist could ever command a plurality. That the lesson failed in the very region where the second German dictatorship left the deepest scars is not an accident of timing. It is evidence that the official story about what Germans want, and what they will tolerate, no longer describes reality.

Those who designed the present order still speak as if the voters are the problem rather than the diagnosis. They cannot quite grasp that a society organized around perpetual atonement and managed demographic change will, at some point, produce a political force that rejects both. Today’s election will not convert them overnight. It may, however, make the conversion harder to postpone. A people that has been told for eighty years that certain questions are closed has begun to reopen them. The architects of the Federal Republic’s moral architecture would do well to notice.
