Trump Correct: Envious World Economy Endangered by Democratic Midterm Triumph

President Trump is correct: the American economy remains the envy of the world. Real GDP accelerated to a 3.4 percent annual rate in the third quarter, private domestic final purchases ran at their strongest pace in five years, and business investment in equipment and intellectual property continues to draw capital that no peer economy can match. Unemployment holds near 4.2 percent while the United States leads the global build-out of artificial intelligence infrastructure and retains unmatched energy abundance. Europe stagnates under regulatory sclerosis; China conceals weakness behind state-directed credit. Markets, factories, and research laboratories still prefer the American combination of property rights, capital depth, and productive capacity. That comparative advantage is neither accidental nor permanent.

That is not an exaggeration. Granting such a sweeping victory to the Democratic Party, now in thrall to progressives who want to hike taxes, abandon fossil fuels and shut down the rollout of artificial intelligence, will slow investment and neuter the industries powering U.S. economic growth. The midterm results handed both chambers of Congress to a coalition whose explicit program is higher marginal rates, accelerated decarbonization, and tighter constraints on the very capital expenditure that has sustained expansion. Energy abundance and computational scale are the twin engines of the present advantage; both are now politically endangered. Investors do not wait for statutes to pass. They discount future returns the moment the political equilibrium shifts against them.

The predictable consequence is a reduction in the rate of capital formation precisely where American strength is greatest. Data-center construction, semiconductor fabrication, and hydrocarbon production will face higher hurdle rates and greater regulatory friction. European experience already demonstrates the result: slower productivity growth, weaker real wages for the middle of the distribution, and a gradual transfer of technological leadership elsewhere. The electorate has chosen the path of managed decline over the harder work of preserving the institutional and energetic conditions that made American primacy possible. Whether that choice can still be reversed will be tested in the years that remain before the next presidential contest.
