Secretary Markwayne Mullin has announced that the Department of Homeland Security will now examine the nation’s election registers and voting logs after the ballots are cast, to determine whether any illegal aliens or noncitizens participated. “We WILL be looking at the registers and all the voting and all those that voted after the election — and making sure that no one voted illegally, because even past this election, it is still DHS’s job to make sure that this was an election that was handled by the federal laws. Meaning that only those that were legally able to vote, voted,” Mullin stated. He added that “After this election we’ll be gathering voting logs, and we’ll be going through those and making sure that no illegals voted.” The declaration ends the long period in which election integrity rested on assurances rather than verification.

Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already a federal crime, carrying potential imprisonment and deportation. The Department of Justice has brought charges against noncitizen voters in multiple states this fall, including indictments of ten foreign nationals in Minnesota for unlawful voting and false claims of citizenship in the 2022, 2024, and even the August 2026 primary elections. Similar actions have occurred elsewhere. Every such ballot, if cast, nullifies the vote of a citizen who followed the law. The systematic review now promised by DHS supplies the mechanism that prior administrations declined to apply.

The days of “trust us” elections have closed. Mullin has made clear that those who voted without legal authority will be identified and pursued under existing statutes. The post-election examination of the logs will reveal the extent of any violations and subject them to the consequences the law already provides. American elections belong to American citizens, and the federal government has now stated its intention to enforce that boundary after the fact.
