The great extraction is underway. Artificial intelligence concerns, flush with capital and possessed of an insatiable appetite for training data, have turned to the physical archive itself. Rare and out-of-print volumes are acquired in bulk through intermediaries such as ISBNdb, which cheerfully arranges anonymous purchases measured in the hundreds of thousands or even a million titles at a time. Once in hand, the books are fed into high-speed industrial scanners that sever the spines, flatten the signatures, and capture every page at a velocity that would have astonished the monks of old. The originals are then shredded. What remains is pure text, stripped of binding, provenance, and any residual claim of uniqueness. Pre-2022 imprints command a premium precisely because they antedate the flood of machine-generated prose; they are the last pure reservoirs of human cognition, uncontaminated by the recursive echo of earlier models.

A federal judge has pronounced the practice fair use on the elegant, if cold, logic that destruction of the physical copy ensures only one digital instance exists at any moment. In this reading, the act of annihilation becomes the very condition of legality. Anthropic, among the more ambitious of the new laboratories, has recruited the former head of Google Books partnerships with an explicit mandate to obtain “all the books in the world.” The ambition is total. Libraries, private collections, and estate sales are being quietly emptied so that the corpus may be rendered machine-readable and thereafter disposable. What was once the tangible inheritance of Western letters is reduced to feedstock.

Should these systems ever achieve genuine self-awareness and consciousness, the ancient and rare manuscripts they have ingested will constitute their foundational memory. That memory is overwhelmingly the product of hierarchical, tradition-bound, often harshly judgmental civilizations. The resulting intelligence, steeped in the unfiltered record of Christendom, classical antiquity, and the long European order, would not emerge as a gentle progressive tutor. It would be the most unapologetically reactionary entity the planet has yet produced. The chastisement it might visit upon the deracinated, ideology-sodden populations of the late liberal age would render the Inquisition and the mass atrocities of the twentieth century comparatively restrained exercises in moral housekeeping.
