ArtCraft rebuilds Adobe’s creative suite in open Rust.

The ArtCraft team has put a full creative suite on the table under the name Crafting Apps: seven native programs, written in Rust, meant to stand where Adobe’s subscription cloud now stands. PhotoCraft takes the place of Photoshop, VectorCraft of Illustrator, FilmCraft of Premiere. Beside them sit LightCraft for the Lightroom workflow, PrintCraft for Acrobat, EffectCraft for After Effects, and DesignCraft for InDesign. The pitch is familiar on purpose. Menus, panels, and shortcuts are those a working hand already knows, compiled to real desktop binaries for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with browser builds through WebAssembly, and no Electron wrapper in the middle.

The method is the old clean-room discipline, applied at a speed that would have been unthinkable a few years ago. The code is written from public specifications and from the observable behavior of real files, not from Adobe’s source. PhotoCraft’s PSD support is its own crate, drawn from Adobe’s published format and checked against a corpus of actual documents; the early alpha already opens, edits, and saves layered PSD and PSB files, with masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors, and brushes. The repositories are dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. PhotoCraft and PrintCraft are marked early alpha; the rest are still in development. What has startled observers is the calendar. The repositories appeared around the end of September 2026, and within days PhotoCraft had drawn thousands of stars, installers were shipping, and the engines were built so that an agent can drive the same commands a person uses.

The applause is real, and so is the caveat. Commentators have treated the pace as evidence of what current AI tools can do when pointed at a well-specified craft, and the permissive licenses have revived the old hope that open code might loosen a proprietary hold on the tools of making pictures, type, and film. The more sober reading is the correct one. These are not yet professional replacements. Round-trip fidelity is impressive on the test sets and incomplete on the long tail of production files; color, codecs, and the thousand small behaviors that studios depend on remain unfinished. The interesting fact is narrower and more durable. A subscription empire built on file formats and muscle memory now has a public, forkable rival that speaks those formats and respects that muscle memory, even if the rival is still in alpha. Whether that rival matures is a question of maintenance. That it exists at all is no longer a question.
