In the decades after the pill and the liberalization of abortion, fertility collapsed below replacement across the continent; the children who would have carried the languages, the law, and the memory of the place simply were not born. What remained was an unspent maternal instinct, precise in its demands and unsatisfied by careers or abstract causes. The women who fill Instagram with images of rescue dogs do not fill maternity wards, and the gap is closed by populations whose birth rates remain above replacement and whose attitude toward the host culture ranges from indifference to active hostility. Cities grow denser with imported populations while native households grow emptier except for the animals that receive the affection once given to sons and daughters. The women who made the trade will, in old age, be tended by nurses drawn from the communities that did not make it, and the animals will be euthanized when the owners can no longer care for them. Nothing in the transaction is reversed. The continent that once sent missionaries and armies now exports its unborn and imports its successors, and the kennels remain full. The projection was always a private solution to a public problem; the problem, having been solved only in feeling, continues its work in fact.
