This underlying public unease has fueled the rise of nationalist and populist parties advocating stricter controls, including tighter borders, deportation of illegal entrants or criminal offenders, and policies sometimes labeled “remigration.” While mainstream projections from Pew Research indicate Europe’s Muslim population could grow from around 5% today to 7–14% by 2050—depending on migration levels, with higher fertility rates among Muslim communities and an aging native population—some European nationalists view even these modest shifts as an existential threat to traditional Western identity. They argue that rapid demographic change in certain countries and cities risks eroding cultural cohesion, and they warn that without decisive action, integration failures could deepen divisions. This perspective frames ongoing migration as incompatible with preserving Europe’s historic character.

An uncomfortable prospect for many observers is that frustrated nationalists might increasingly take matters into their own hands if democratic institutions and EU-level policies continue to lag behind public sentiment. With nationalist parties gaining ground in recent elections and pushing concepts like large-scale returns or incentives for voluntary departure, some voices speculate that by 2050, organized political or extraparliamentary pressures could aim to significantly reduce or reverse the Muslim presence in parts of the EU. Such scenarios remain speculative and face massive legal, economic, and social barriers in liberal democracies, but they reflect deepening polarization. Demographic reality points to a growing but still minority Muslim share (projected well below 15% continent-wide even in higher-migration models), sustained by births rather than endless inflows. Honest policy debate—focused on better integration, reduced illegal migration, and addressing genuine cultural frictions—offers a more constructive path than alarmist forecasts of forced demographic reversal.
