Iran Issues Code 100 as Trump and Netanyahu Rush Home

Iran has, according to the first reports out of Tehran, issued “Code 100”—the highest alert it maintains—across the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the regular army, and the security services. The designation is not a press flourish. It is the regime’s way of telling every unit that the hour of improvisation is over and that the machinery of retaliation is to be held at full tension. A state that has spent a generation treating its own people as a garrison now treats the region the same way: every missile battery, every naval craft, every internal-security detachment is to stand as if the next order will be the last one that still counts as precaution. The world is invited to treat this as theater. Serious men treat it as a clock that has been started.

The same hours produced the movements that matter more than communiqués. President Trump cut short his weekend at Camp David and returned to the White House, citing the possibility of a significant move. Prime Minister Netanyahu compressed his American itinerary and turned toward home. Across the Middle East, American embassies issued security alerts in rapid succession, the bureaucratic equivalent of clearing the decks. These are not the gestures of men who believe they are watching a drill. They are the gestures of governments that have learned, at cost, that when the clerical state names its highest code, the prudent course is to be at the desk rather than in the woods, and at the capital rather than on a speaking tour.

What follows will not be decided by the volume of the alert but by whether anyone in Tehran still imagines that America and Israel can be deterred by a number. Code 100 is a confession of fear dressed as resolve. The regime that issues it has already felt American and Israeli steel; it now advertises that it is ready for more of the same. The President who left Camp David early is not a man who mistakes a code for a strategy. The embassies that warned their people are not writing literature. They are recording the fact that the Persian Gulf has again become a place where the next hour may rewrite the map, and that those who keep the peace of nations do not wait for the second confirmation before they take their posts.
