The roof collapsed onto the lower floors, the campanile fell, and two-thirds of the exterior was lost; local authorities described the historic core as largely destroyed—a deliberate act against a symbol of the Republic itself.

That outcome was not an unforeseeable accident of economic grievance. For decades Western elites treated mass immigration from culturally distant societies as an unalloyed good, to be justified by appeals to diversity, compassion, and the moral prestige of openness. Fundamental questions of assimilation, trust, and the conditions required for a common civic life were dismissed as atavistic or worse. France, like much of Western Europe, imported large populations whose norms of authority, honor, and public order often diverged sharply from those that had produced buildings such as Limoges’s town hall. The resulting parallel societies, concentrated in the banlieues from which recent student unrest spread, have repeatedly demonstrated that the old republican bargain—equal rights in exchange for equal submission to common rules—does not travel automatically across civilizational lines.

The warnings were explicit and long-standing. Observers from Enoch Powell onward, and later figures on both the right and the center-left, noted that rapid demographic change without rigorous selection or cultural expectation would erode the social capital on which orderly self-government depends. They were answered with moralism rather than evidence. The burning of a nineteenth-century hôtel de ville by radical elements amid protests that began in the suburbs is the predictable fruit of that refusal. Heritage is not an ornament; it is the physical record of a people who once believed their institutions and their continuity mattered. When those who inherit the institutions no longer share that belief—or are no longer the same people—the stones themselves become targets. The lesson is not complicated: a polity that declines to ask whether newcomers will sustain the order they enter will eventually watch that order burned.
