The convention’s organizers insist it is a verdict on the alternative: a restored administrative state, reopened borders, and the cultural program that accompanied the last Democratic interregnum. Candidates who stay away may preserve a sliver of local distance; they cannot preserve the larger fact that the midterms will be fought over the America First project they inherited. Dallas is the party’s attempt to make that fact explicit before early voting begins.
