The senators who faced Anthony Fauci in successive rounds of congressional interrogation managed to miss one of the more revealing episodes in the long catalog of official COVID counsel. In late July 2020, Fauci publicly advised that Americans might usefully add goggles or eye shields to their masks, on the straightforward physiological ground that the conjunctiva ranks among the mucosal surfaces most readily colonized by respiratory viruses. The recommendation, delivered in an interview that quickly circulated through major outlets, was never elevated to formal guidance, yet it rested on a premise that should have invited sustained examination: if the eyes constitute a principal portal of entry, why had public-health messaging for months concentrated almost exclusively on the nose and mouth?

What followed was the familiar pattern of quiet abandonment. The goggle suggestion evaporated from subsequent briefings and press appearances without explanation or data. No careful accounting was offered of the relative transmissibility through ocular versus respiratory routes, nor of the practical feasibility of widespread eye protection in ordinary civilian life. The public was simply left to infer that the advice had been provisional, experimental, or perhaps rhetorical—an instance of the shifting orthodoxy that characterized so much of the official response. Senators, however, declined to press the point. They did not ask Fauci to reconcile the July statement with the earlier and later emphasis on masks alone, nor to clarify whether the eyes’ susceptibility had been overstated, understated, or simply set aside once the political and logistical costs of another protective mandate became apparent.

That omission is of a piece with the larger failure to treat Fauci’s successive pronouncements as objects of genuine scrutiny rather than successive acts of revealed authority. A serious interrogation would have required him to explain the evidentiary basis for elevating ocular protection one week and discarding it the next, and to address the broader implication that public guidance had been calibrated less to stable scientific understanding than to the evolving needs of messaging and compliance. By leaving the episode unexamined, the hearings preserved the impression that each change in counsel was self-justifying, and that the cumulative record of adjustment required no retrospective accounting. The public was thereby denied the clearer understanding that such accounting might have supplied.
