California Democrat Eric Swalwell has begun openly campaigning for nationwide vote-by-phone, framing it as the ultimate fulfillment of “maximum democracy.” In his telling, requiring people to show up in person or mail a paper ballot is an archaic barrier that suppresses turnout, and letting citizens tap an app from their couch at 2 a.m. while half-watching Netflix is the enlightened future. He insists the technology already exists and that any security concerns are just excuses from people who secretly want fewer citizens to vote. The pitch is delivered with the earnest confidence of a man who once farted on live television and never broke character, so the bar for self-awareness is admittedly low.

The irony is that he’s technically correct that the tech is trivial. A properly designed two-phase commit voting app tied to a government-issued cryptographic identity (think Social Security number + biometric or hardware token) could be built in months, not years. Phase one: the voter authenticates once and locks their choice into an immutable ledger; phase two: the ledger commits the vote only after verifying no duplicate exists anywhere in the system. Every ballot gets a unique, publicly viewable hash while keeping the voter anonymous, creating an audit trail stronger than any paper system on Earth. Results would be final roughly 90 seconds after polls close, and any attempt at stuffing the digital ballot box would be mathematically impossible without cracking military-grade encryption in real time. Estonia already runs binding national elections this way with zero documented fraud.

That’s exactly why the political class will never allow it. Instant, transparent, fraud-proof elections would strip both parties of their favorite off-the-books tools: harvesting warehouses, suitcases under tables, provisional ballot dumps at 4 a.m., and the thousand small cheats that turn close races into “fortified” ones. When the count is finished before the late-night hosts finish their monologues, there’s no window for lawyers, no time for “found” ballots, and no plausible deniability. The same politicians who lecture us about “threats to democracy” understand perfectly that unbreakable transparency is the single greatest threat to their own power. So they’ll keep Swalwell’s dream in the same filing cabinet as national popular vote compacts and court-packing: great for fundraising emails, fatal if it ever becomes real.
