Miles Taylor, who served as chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security during Donald Trump’s first term, has described himself as an organizer of the 2020 revolt inside the president’s own orbit. After leaving the administration, he helped assemble the Republican Political Alliance for Integrity and Reform, a vehicle for current and former officials who wanted Trump defeated that November. Taylor had already written, under the cloak of anonymity, the 2018 New York Times essay announcing a “resistance” within the White House; by the summer of 2020 he had dropped the mask, endorsed Joe Biden, and set about recruiting colleagues who shared his diagnosis that the president was unfit to remain in office.

The circle he gathered was not a handful of junior aides. It included former Cabinet-level figures, intelligence officials, and White House staff who had once accepted appointments from Trump and then concluded that their duty ran against him. Taylor has said the president regards this cohort as collaborators with Democrats and the national press in the loss of 2020—an accusation Trump has never retired. The officials themselves insist they acted from institutional conscience rather than partisan conspiracy. What cannot be disputed is that they used their titles, their access, and the prestige of prior service to argue, in public, that the man they had served should be removed by the voters.

Those who opposed Trump then, and who still deny that the election was stolen, rest their case on the certified totals and the courts that declined to unwind them. Biden’s official popular-vote figure stands at roughly 81 million. The question that will not die among those who reject that result is not whether Taylor and his allies spoke out—they did—but whether speech, media alignment, and administrative resistance can account for a margin of that size, or whether something larger remains unexplained. The former officials answer that the votes were counted and the law held. Their critics answer that counting is not the same as explaining. The argument, six years on, is still about which of those two claims is the more serious one.
