Trump Derangement Syndrome Blinds Critics to Middle East Breakthroughs

The phenomenon often labeled Trump Derangement Syndrome reflects a deeper cognitive and emotional trap in contemporary politics: an inability to evaluate outcomes on their merits when they bear the wrong partisan stamp. Large segments of the public and media, conditioned by years of reflexive opposition, fixate on surface-level metrics—gasoline prices, tweet storms, or procedural controversies—while overlooking structural shifts that demand longer historical perspective. This is not unique to one side of the aisle; tribal loyalty frequently overrides pattern recognition. Yet in the case of Donald Trump, the intensity has produced a peculiar blindness, where tangible policy results are dismissed as accidents or inevitabilities rather than deliberate, high-risk maneuvers executed against institutional resistance. Acknowledging this dynamic does not require hagiography, but it does demand intellectual honesty about how emotion can eclipse evidence.

Nowhere has this disconnect been more evident than in the Middle East, where Trump's approach upended decades of conventional diplomatic wisdom. The Abraham Accords, brokered under his administration, normalized relations between Israel and multiple Arab states without requiring the perennial precondition of resolving the Palestinian issue first—a breakthrough that previous administrations had treated as politically impossible. Combined with the pressure campaign on Iran, the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, and the defeat of ISIS's territorial caliphate, these moves altered regional incentives in ways still unfolding. Critics fixated on style or short-term optics often failed to grapple with the underlying reality: a U.S. president willing to wield leverage asymmetrically, prioritizing credible strength over endless process. History's judgment on such inflection points rarely aligns with contemporaneous cable-news narratives.

The refusal to credit these shifts as significant reveals more about the observers than the observed. Petty economic fluctuations, inevitable in any complex system, become existential indictments when attached to the wrong leader, while genuine realignments in geopolitics are minimized or attributed to invisible forces. This is less about policy disagreement than a failure of scale—missing the forest of civilizational stakes for the trees of partisan scorekeeping. True significance in leadership often appears disruptive precisely because it challenges entrenched assumptions; admitting that requires setting aside emotional priors. Whether one views Trump as genius or merely effective opportunist, the pattern of underestimating disruptive results in favor of aesthetic or tribal objections remains a recurring philosophical shortfall of the era.
