Trump Weighs Historic Rename of Lake Ontario to Lake America

President Trump has announced that the United States is giving serious consideration to renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America. The proposal arrives amid a sharp deterioration in trade relations with Canada, particularly with the province of Ontario, and follows the collapse of negotiations that prompted new American tariffs. In his statement the President made plain that the United States no longer expects substantial commercial dealings with the province, and therefore sees no reason to retain a name that ties the body of water to a jurisdiction increasingly at odds with American interests. The gesture is of a piece with earlier restorations of American nomenclature, most notably the redesignation of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The conventional name is itself a historical residue. Lake Ontario received its designation while the continent still answered to an English king. That political arrangement ended in 1776. For two and a half centuries the lake has formed part of the shared northern frontier of the American Republic, its southern shore belonging entirely to the United States and its waters forming a common resource of the Great Lakes system. That the name of a foreign province should continue to mark a feature so thoroughly American is an anachronism that ought to have been corrected long ago. Two hundred and five years after independence, the correction is overdue.

Renaming is never merely semantic. It is an assertion of sovereignty and historical memory. When a nation recovers the power to name its own geography, it recovers a measure of the self-respect that earlier generations secured by force of arms and constitutional order. Lake America would simply record what has been true since the founding: the lake is as much America’s as Canada’s, and the American claim is no longer subordinate to the cartography of a vanished empire. Whether the change is formally adopted or remains a pointed declaration, the principle it embodies is clear and long deferred.
