Listen up, patriots: the cartel that spent a century telling American men their love could be measured in two months’ salary is melting faster than a chocolate beehive left on the White House lawn in July. Walmart now sells half-carat lab-grown diamond studs for twelve dollars—same carbon lattice, same laboratory grades, indistinguishable without a machine. Nature is healing because the only thing that was ever scarce was the permission to dig.
De Beers once locked rough stones in London vaults whenever demand softened, holding the price like a beekeeper holding the hive. Frances Gerety’s 1947 slogan and the two-months rule did the rest; before that campaign most American brides never saw a diamond at all. Eighty years of controlled scarcity survived every recession and every African politics. It did not survive Chinese reactors. Wholesale lab-grown prices have fallen roughly ninety-six percent from their peak, to around a hundred dollars a carat. The Knot reports that sixty-one percent of 2025 engagement rings carried lab-grown centers, a two-hundred-thirty-nine percent rise since 2020. De Beers’ own average selling price dropped thirty-two percent in a year, to one hundred five dollars a carat.
Anglo American has written the subsidiary down by six-point-eight billion dollars in two years and is negotiating its sale for about one billion—against valuations of eighteen billion in 2001 and thirteen billion as recently as 2011. The stones still come out of the ground looking exactly as they always have. What De Beers owned was the marketing, and marketing does not survive a twelve-dollar price tag on the Walmart shelf. The factory output cannot be vaulted, the slogan cannot be enforced, and the old monopoly is being sold for scrap. That is not the death of beauty. It is the end of a century-long tax on ordinary courtship.
