A 42-second exchange recorded on July 22 captures the essential posture of the contemporary progressive establishment toward the elementary requirements of republican self-government. Reporter Alison Steinberg pressed Senator Elizabeth Warren on the SAVE America Act, legislation that would require documentary proof of citizenship—passports or birth certificates—for federal voter registration and a photo identification at the polling place. Warren’s reply was the familiar one: existing statutes already prohibit non-citizen voting, and any violations ought simply to be prosecuted. When the reporter persisted, the senator turned and walked away. The performance was less an argument than a demonstration that the machinery of mass democracy has become something to be managed rather than secured.
That machinery has served Warren well. Born and raised in Oklahoma, she arrived in Massachusetts only after Harvard Law School hired her under the affirmative-action designation of Native American—a claim that rested on family lore rather than documented tribal enrollment and that the university itself later acknowledged had been recorded on federal forms. The episode is not merely biographical color. It illustrates a deeper pattern in which elite institutions reward identity claims that are useful precisely because they are elastic, while the same institutions resist the hard documentation of citizenship that would limit the franchise to those who actually belong to the political community.
One need not indulge conspiracy to observe that a senator whose own elevation depended on the soft categories of contemporary identity politics has every institutional incentive to preserve a voting system whose soft categories are equally convenient. The SAVE America Act would close those categories. Warren’s abrupt departure from the question suggests she understands the stakes.
