While America Slept, Trump Buries Global Elite with Epstein Files

As the Super Bowl wrapped up on February 8, 2026, and much of America turned in for the night, a flurry of developments unfolded in the ongoing fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein case, driven by the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of over 3.5 million pages of documents in late January under the Epstein Files Transparency Act signed by President Trump in November 2025. On February 9, Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s convicted associate serving a 20-year sentence, appeared virtually before the House Oversight Committee, invoking her Fifth Amendment rights repeatedly and refusing to answer questions. Her attorney indicated she might testify if granted clemency, suggesting she could exonerate figures like Trump and former President Bill Clinton, though no deal was accepted, highlighting the persistent tension around Epstein’s network of powerful connections.

The document release triggered a cascade of resignations and investigations among global elites. In the U.K., Lord Peter Mandelson faced a criminal probe by the Metropolitan Police for alleged misconduct in public office after emails suggested he shared market-sensitive information with Epstein while serving as a government minister in 2009. In Norway, Ambassador Mona Juul resigned amid scrutiny over her family’s financial ties to Epstein, while Crown Princess Mette-Marit issued a public apology for her own communications with him, expressing regret for disappointing the public and royal family. Closer to home, Brad Karp stepped down as chairman of the prominent U.S. law firm Paul Weiss after emails revealed his interactions with Epstein, marking another high-profile exit. Prince William and Kate Middleton broke their silence, stating they were “deeply concerned” by the revelations, with their focus on the victims.

Amid these scandals, international diplomacy intensified, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scheduling an urgent visit to Washington on February 11 to meet President Trump and discuss ongoing U.S.-Iran talks mediated in Oman. Netanyahu aimed to push for broader restrictions, including limits on Iran’s ballistic missiles and support for regional proxies, beyond a narrow nuclear focus. While Larry Summers had resigned from OpenAI’s board back in November 2025 over earlier Epstein disclosures, the February events underscored how the files continued to unravel elite networks, though claims of an “entire global elite falling apart” appear overstated, with responses varying from apologies to investigations rather than widespread collapse.
