White House Architect Quits; Trump Says “I Am the Code”

The Washington Post reported yesterday that James McCrery II, the first architect engaged for the White House ballroom rising on the former East Wing, resigned in October 2025 after warning that the president’s preferred preliminary design failed fire and life-safety requirements. Emergency egress through the main entrance was inadequate for the planned occupancy; secondary exits were insufficient; little stood between a kitchen fire and the hall above; and the plumbing could not serve a room that had swollen from hundreds of seats toward well over a thousand. Trump, according to two people familiar with the exchanges and documents reviewed by the paper, dismissed the objection that municipal and federal codes bound the work. Building codes, he maintained, do not apply to construction on these grounds. Then came the sentence now traveling the country: “I am the code.” McCrery later said he was grateful for the honor of the earliest designs and stepped aside so another firm could continue. The White House has not publicly confirmed the quotation.

What followed was not a seminar on occupancy tables. It was a burst of invention. Within hours the line was recast as Judge Dredd in a gold-leaf ballroom, as a Roman emperor scrawling Corinthian capitals across a Sharpie-marked plan, as a builder who treats statute as a suggestion and sovereignty as the only permit that matters. The memes are not subtle. They treat the clash as comedy of manners between the clerk who recites the code book and the man who claims to embody the house. That is why they travel. They convert a construction dispute into a parable of will: the republic’s most famous residence either submits to the same rules as a suburban banquet hall, or it does not.

The same report detonated a familiar current among those who still read events as comms. “I am the code” was received not as architectural swagger but as a compact: the man who writes the rules of the house writes the rules of the age. Threads filled with reminders to watch the builders, trust the plan, and treat every resignation, every Sharpie note, every delayed code review as another drop. Whether the phrase was ever spoken in that exact form is, for that audience, almost beside the point. The story arrived already shaped as strategy—an assertion that the Executive Residence answers to a different law than the agencies that ordinarily police federal brick. Patriots who have spent years waiting for the storm to arrive at the gates now hear it in the language of fire exits and Corinthian columns. The plan, they insist, remains the plan. The code, they add, has a name.
