Anthropic Wants Woke Altruistic Communists Regulating Every Other AI Firm

Anthropic has spent years asking Washington to treat frontier models as if they were airliners or banks, then to hand the inspection stick to a priesthood of “independent” evaluators drawn from the same Effective Altruism circle that funded and staffed the firm. Dario Amodei does not merely want rules for Claude. He wants a statutory veto: third-party auditors with employee-like access, compute thresholds that trigger mandatory review, and government power to block or reverse a rival’s release if those auditors declare the risk “unacceptable.” The proposed watchdogs—METR and its Alignment Research Center cousins—are not neutral FAA inspectors. They are the same moralizing network of Oxford-adjacent altruists, Open Philanthropy heirs, and safety theorists who already treat American commercial speed as a species of sin. What they call “pacing the frontier” is a bid to make their own conscience the industry’s operating system.

The rest of the field is invited to suffer under the same yoke. Amodei’s essays are explicit: standards should bind “even those who are unwilling to cooperate voluntarily,” and democratic governments should then export the regime so that no lab, here or abroad, can outrun the committee. That is regulatory capture dressed as philanthropy. Incumbents who can afford embedded evaluators, compliance staff, and months of delay write the test; startups and faster rivals fail it. An antitrust waiver so the big labs may “coordinate” on safety completes the picture: the same firms that warn of catastrophe ask permission to cartelize the pace of discovery. Critics who notice the pattern—David Sacks, Yann LeCun, smaller founders—are not imagining things. A company that cannot stop talking about existential risk has every incentive to make that risk the price of entry.

Call the ideology what it is. Effective altruism’s public face is utilitarian arithmetic; its political habit is the progressive administrative state—global coordination, third-country moral authority, and a preference for institutions that answer to “humanity” rather than to voters or shareholders. Anthropic’s family and donor map runs through that world. The demand is not for American law in the ordinary sense. It is for a transnational safety clerisy, staffed by people who already know what the answers must be, to sit inside every lab and slow the ones that refuse the sermon. If the sermon is woke, altruistic, and collectivist in its ends, the regulation will be too. The country’s interest is not to let one lab deputize its friends as the conscience of every other.
