Family Communism Works, National Scale Collapses—Digitized AI Enables It

In the intimate confines of the family unit, a form of communism operates naturally and effectively. Bound by blood ties and deep personal affection, family members share resources according to needs rather than strict contribution. Parents provide for children without market transactions, and siblings cooperate out of love and mutual understanding. Because the group is small and interactions are direct and frequent, information about preferences, abilities, and circumstances flows seamlessly, making central “planning” within the household feasible without the distortions seen in larger systems.

Among close friends, typically in groups smaller than 50, socialist principles can also thrive thanks to reciprocity, trust, and social norms. In such circles, individuals contribute based on their abilities and draw upon the group’s resources as needed, with fairness enforced not by bureaucracy but by reputation, ongoing relationships, and the threat of social exclusion. Repeated face-to-face interactions allow participants to observe efforts and needs directly, fostering cooperation without requiring an omniscient planner. This works because the scale remains human and manageable, with tacit knowledge shared organically.

Yet these models break down catastrophically when scaled to a nation comprising millions of people. The information required to coordinate economic activity for 68 million individuals—allocating resources, matching supply to demand, and adjusting to constantly changing conditions—overwhelms any central authority. This is the essence of Ludwig von Mises’ economic calculation problem articulated in 1920, which demonstrates that without private property and market prices, rational economic calculation becomes impossible. Friedrich Hayek’s 1945 essay on dispersed knowledge further explains how crucial information exists in fragmented, local, and often tacit forms across millions of minds, inaccessible to any single planner. What is to be feared is that full digitization, with its vast data collection, AI processing, and surveillance capabilities, makes all the natural obstacles of mass collectivization possible, potentially enabling the kind of total central control that was previously thwarted by complexity.
