President Trump has again done what presidents used to do without apology: he has named the thing he holds. In a post asserting that American forces now command the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman—the passage through which a fifth of the world’s oil still tries to move—he asked whether the Strait of Hormuz should not simply become the Trump Strait. The question is not decorative. It follows months of blockade, mine-clearing, and the quiet admission by Central Command that the United States, not the Islamic Republic, now decides what floats. Naming is the oldest act of sovereignty. Empires that refuse it end up living inside other people’s maps.

The precedent is already written in executive ink. The Gulf of Mexico became the Gulf of America on the first day of the second term; Lake Ontario became Lake America last week, over Ottawa’s protests and the usual lectures about “international waters.” Cartographers in Mountain View and Cupertino updated their layers for American users while foreign ministries issued statements that changed nothing on the water. Those who treat nomenclature as mere branding have not read the record. A name that appears on official U.S. charts, in Defense Department orders, and on the screens of every tanker captain who wants insurance is a name that functions. The betting markets, such as they are, have priced the next signature accordingly.

What remains is the familiar ritual of objection. Diplomats will call the proposal unserious; editorial boards will detect vanity; Tehran will call it a delusion even as its own tankers sit idle. None of that alters the facts of control. The strait was never a museum piece of Persian antiquity. It was a choke point, and choke points belong to the power that can keep them open or shut. If the President signs the order, he will merely be recording what the Navy has already demonstrated: that the age in which America apologized for its own geography is over, and that the map, like the waterway itself, now answers to a different name.
