Amy-Jill Levine, the Vanderbilt professor emerita and longtime member of the Catholic Biblical Association since 1988, has been elevated to its presidency following a year-long nomination process that culminated at the society’s eighty-eighth annual meeting on July 20, 2026. The first Jewish scholar to hold the office, she arrives with a clear program: to challenge what she regards as lingering anti-Jewish readings of Christian Scripture, to press newer historical scholarship upon clergy and teachers still relying on older seminary notes, and to insist that Jesus be understood firmly within his first-century Jewish milieu so that Christian theology might be purified of later accretions. Her résumé includes audiences with Pope Francis, a teaching stint at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, and decades of influence upon the very circles that shape Catholic biblical interpretation.
One may admire the intellectual rigor of recovering the Jewish context of the Gospels; one may even grant that certain traditional Christian readings have, over centuries, caricatured Judaism in ways that later proved disastrous. Yet the spectacle of a Jewish New Testament specialist ascending to the presidency of an association founded by Catholic biblical scholars is not merely an interfaith milestone. It is a revealing symptom of institutional priorities. When an organization whose original purpose was the advancement of Catholic scriptural study elects as its head a scholar whose life’s work has been the correction of Catholic and Protestant misreadings, the question is no longer one of hospitality but of self-definition. The association has chosen, in effect, an external auditor over an internal steward.
That this particular scholar has, by her own account and by the association’s proud announcement, enjoyed sustained access to Vatican circles for decades only sharpens the irony. Institutions that once guarded their doctrinal inheritance with jealous care now appear eager to outsource the interpretation of their founding texts to those outside the household of faith. The result is not necessarily malice; it is something more corrosive—an erosion of confidence so thorough that the guardians of the tradition no longer trust themselves to read their own Scriptures without supervision. In that light, the old and ugly adage about comparative culpability finds a new, institutional resonance: the greater scandal may lie less with those who never claimed the inheritance than with those who have steadily surrendered it.
