Christian nationalism, as currently practiced and preached in respectable circles, amounts to little more than the old liberal universalism dressed in Sunday clothes. It recites a short list of traditional virtues—family, piety, ordered liberty—while insisting that the nation itself is nothing more than a propositional construct open to anyone who recites the proper creed. Race, peoplehood, and the concrete historical inheritance of a particular civilization are treated as embarrassing accidents rather than the necessary ground of any lasting political order. The result is a faith that claims to conserve while systematically dissolving the very particularities that once made Christian societies recognizably Christian and national.
This is not a recovery of the older Christian political tradition; it is a late mutation of the same egalitarian impulse that produced the open-borders progressivism it claims to oppose. Where the medieval or early modern Christian kingdom understood itself as the steward of a specific people under God, the modern Christian nationalist typically treats the people as interchangeable raw material for a set of abstract principles. The nation becomes a hotel rather than a home, and the church becomes the chaplain to a universal human rights regime that happens to prefer traditional marriage and lower taxes. The substance of the old order is quietly discarded; only the aesthetic remains.
What presents itself as resistance is therefore a more pious version of the same liberal cancer. It cannot name the demographic transformation of the West without apology, cannot defend the historic character of European-descended peoples without immediate disclaimers, and cannot imagine a politics that prioritizes the continuity of a concrete community over the infinite expansion of moral claims. In this sense Christian nationalism performs the same work as its secular counterparts: it launders the dissolution of particular attachments under the banner of higher principle. The wrapping paper is different. The contents are not.
