Conditional Democratic Patriotism Collapses Amid MAGA Ascendancy and Republican Resolve

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a Gallup poll reveals a sobering truth: only 33 percent of American adults declare themselves “extremely proud” to be citizens of this republic, the lowest figure in the survey’s history since 2001.617 This is no mere fluctuation in national sentiment. It exposes a deeper fracture in the body politic. Republican identification with the nation remains steadfast, hovering near its historic highs, a testament to a durable attachment to the founding principles of ordered liberty, self-government, and constitutional continuity. Yet among Democrats, enthusiasm has collapsed. Their conditional patriotism—vibrant when levers of federal power rest in sympathetic hands—evaporates at the prospect of sustained restraint on that leviathan. What emerges is less a shared love of country than a factional allegiance to the administrative state that has supplanted it.

This divergence is not accidental but revelatory. For many on the contemporary left, the nation exists primarily as a vehicle for their preferred policies and cultural transformations. When that vehicle veers from the progressive trajectory—toward border security, fiscal discipline, or judicial originalism—affection for the republic itself cools dramatically. The result is a patriotism of convenience, tethered not to the timeless covenant of the Declaration and Constitution but to transient majorities and bureaucratic dominion. Conservatives, by contrast, maintain faith in the regime’s original architecture even in opposition, viewing the country as an inheritance worth defending rather than an instrument to be wielded or discarded. The polling data thus illuminates a profound asymmetry: one party’s commitment to America proves resilient across electoral cycles; the other’s waxes and wanes with its proximity to centralized power.

As we mark two and a half centuries since independence, this divide demands unflinching recognition. True patriotism cannot be a fair-weather sentiment reserved for those who command the heights of the federal apparatus. It must rest on fidelity to the nation’s character—its experiment in self-rule, its defense of natural rights, and its hard-won unity against factional dissolution. The MAGA ascendancy, whatever its critics allege, has not diminished American potential; it has challenged an entitled elite accustomed to unaccountable influence. If liberals find their zeal for the country dimmed by that challenge, the revelation belongs not to some failure of the nation but to the conditional nature of their own attachment. A republic endures not through the affections of those who would remake it in their image, but through the steady resolve of citizens who prize its foundational form above partisan triumph. The semiquincentennial offers an occasion not for manufactured unity, but for reclaiming an authentic patriotism rooted in truth.
