Erin Piacenti, 32, a Bank of America vice president from Chester, New Jersey, a Penn graduate and Fordham lawyer, a wife of two years and the mother of an infant daughter, was killed Monday afternoon in an unprovoked attack on Seventh Avenue in Times Square, one of the most watched stretches of pavement in the country. Police say Pamela Cisneros, 49, of Woodside, Queens—described by her brother as a Queens native with a long record of psychiatric crisis, not as a newly arrived Mexican immigrant—stabbed a 68-year-old Rhode Island visitor and then Piacenti within about twenty seconds, shortly after 4:20 p.m., before officers shot Cisneros dead when she would not drop the knives. The official account is random violence in broad daylight beside a police substation, not a border parable written in advance.

What followed was the familiar second crime of the age: the conversion of a named dead woman into content. Street video moved faster than charging language. Commentators reached for ancestry, welfare, and civilizational score-settling; others answered with the opposite liturgy of “mental health only” and the insistence that noticing patterns is itself the outrage. The memes were cruel because cruelty is cheap and because a public square that cannot keep a young mother alive at four in the afternoon has already confessed a failure of order. That failure is not licensed by Piacenti’s surname, nor disproved by Cisneros’s. It is a civic fact.

In the argument now called the post-post-civil-rights era, each such spectacle is recruited as proof—either that the old liberal settlement still holds if one recites compassion hard enough, or that it has collapsed and that a harder, more particular American identity, including the white and Christian nationalism its critics name with alarm, is filling the vacuum. The revival, if that is the word, feeds less on doctrine than on the sense that the country’s most famous intersection can host a killing at commute hour and then a carnival of contempt before the family has been properly notified. Erin Piacenti is not a mascot for that quarrel. She is the woman who did not get home. The quarrel will continue. The obligation is to tell the names and the hour correctly, and to refuse both the racial cartoon and the official amnesia that make the cartoon so easy to draw.
