The Supreme Court has done what a republic is supposed to do when the franchise is at stake: it has refused to treat citizenship as an inconvenience. On Friday the Court stayed a lower-court injunction and cleared the way for the Trump administration to use a modified SAVE system that draws on Social Security records to help states verify that those on the rolls are, in fact, citizens. The vote was six to three. Justices Jackson, Sotomayor, and Kagan dissented, as one would expect when the question is whether the United States may know who is entitled to vote in its own elections.

What the ruling actually does is modest and lawful. It restores a tool the states have long requested and that Congress authorized decades ago when it told Homeland Security to share citizenship and immigration data with other agencies. The administration may now furnish that information—including Social Security identifiers—so that election officials can check individual registrations before the midterms. Federal law still bars systematic mass purges inside the ninety-day quiet period. The Court did not invent a new police power; it merely declined to let a district judge in Washington freeze the ordinary work of list maintenance while an appeal crawls forward. That is not a revolution. It is housekeeping.

The fury on the other side is the tell. For years the same voices have insisted that noncitizen voting is a phantom, then fought every practical means of looking. They know the incentive structure: people present in the country without lawful status do not vote Republican. So the campaign against verification is not a civil-liberties brief. It is an effort to keep the rolls as they are—opaque, swollen, and useful. A nation that cannot tell a citizen from a noncitizen at the polling place has already surrendered the first condition of self-government. The Court has simply declined to ratify the surrender.
