The sight of steel cages bolted around air-conditioning condensers in Atlanta is no mere local eccentricity. It is a visible confession that ordinary property can no longer be left unguarded in the American city. Homeowners and landlords, once confident that the night would leave their machines intact, now consign thousands of dollars to fabricators who sink iron frames into concrete so that copper thieves cannot simply walk away with the heart of a household’s comfort. What was once the unremarkable infrastructure of a temperate civilization has become an object requiring fortification, as if the residents of a major Southern metropolis had been forced to adopt the defensive habits of a frontier outpost. This is not progress; it is the material sign of a social order that has lost the capacity to enforce the elementary distinction between mine and thine.
Americans need not accept such a regime of perpetual siege. The cages are the downstream consequence of a demographic and legal experiment that has imported, and then legally entrenched, populations whose cultural and behavioral patterns erode the habits of reciprocity on which ordered liberty depends. The remedy is not more surveillance cameras or heavier gauges of steel, but the recovery of the nation’s right to define its own membership. Mass denaturalization and the subsequent removal of those whose presence was secured through the expansive and often fraudulent reading of citizenship statutes would restore the demographic and cultural preconditions for public safety. Only then can the ordinary American cease living as a prisoner of his own porch.
An indispensable first step is the repeal of the Fourteenth Amendment’s citizenship clause, that post-Civil War provision whose original purpose has been inverted into a mechanism of permanent demographic transformation. With that clause removed, the polity would regain the authority to determine belonging according to criteria more exacting than mere birth on soil. Artificial intelligence, applied to comprehensive records, and the clarifying power of modern genetics can together distinguish those whose ancestral and civilizational affinities bind them to the historic American nation from those who do not. Such instruments, far from being novel tyrannies, are simply the tools a self-respecting people must employ if it intends to remain master of its own house rather than a tenant in a captive city ringed by cages.
