President Donald Trump has drawn a firm line against the iconoclasm that once swept American cities. In his October 11 Truth Social message marking Columbus Day, he declared that the “days of plunder” of Christopher Columbus statues are finished, and that the monuments are returning “more magnificent than ever.” The post singled out the Italian-American community, which, Trump wrote, had been “forced to suffer” while “Radical Left Dumocrats, Socialists, and Communists rampaged through our cities and towns ripping down almost all of the beautiful statues.”
The removals of recent years were never mere municipal housekeeping. They formed part of a broader campaign to treat the European settlement of the Americas as a foundational crime rather than the beginning of a distinct civilization. Critics continue to argue that honoring Columbus “glorifies the exploitation and genocide of native peoples,” a framing that reduces centuries of contact, exchange, and subsequent national development to a single moral indictment. Italian Americans, whose public symbols had long marked their arrival and assimilation, found those symbols treated as disposable relics of an illegitimate past.
Trump’s insistence that the statues are back is therefore more than cultural nostalgia. It registers a decision that the selective erasure of historical figures will no longer be treated as an irreversible moral advance. By restoring the monuments and reaffirming Columbus Day against competing observances, the administration has signaled that the public memory of the nation’s origins will not be rewritten solely by those who regard the discovery itself as an original sin. The plunder, as Trump put it, is over.
