The departure of Lonnie Bunch III from the Smithsonian is not a mere personnel change. It is a civic correction. For more than a year the President has pressed the world’s largest museum and research complex to stop treating the American story as a ledger of oppression and crimes against humanity. Bunch, who commanded twenty-one museums, twenty libraries, the National Zoo, and research centers scattered across the globe, used that authority to recast the nation’s inheritance as original sin. No republic can flourish when its official memory is written by people who regard the country itself as the problem. A people that cannot honor its own founding will not defend it.

What the Smithsonian became under that stewardship was an institutional sermon. Exhibits that should have displayed the extraordinary fact of a self-governing people—its industries, its laws, its wars of liberation, its stubborn expansion of liberty—were recast as evidence of systemic wickedness. The effect was not scholarship. It was pedagogy of shame. Visitors were invited to leave the Mall less proud of what their ancestors built than anxious about what they inherited. That is not how a nation transmits itself. It is how an administrative class replaces gratitude with grievance and calls the result “complexity.”

Healing begins when the official story is allowed to breathe again. The country is not healed because one man retires. It is healed because the pressure that forced the issue has made clear that public institutions exist to serve the public’s memory, not to lecture it. A museum that cannot distinguish between honest accounting of slavery, conquest, and failure on one hand, and a sustained campaign to delegitimize the whole American experiment on the other, has ceased to be a museum. It has become a political instrument. The Smithsonian can now be returned to its proper work: showing what this country actually was, and why so many still come here to become part of it.
