Rep. Gill Exposes Smithsonian's Marxist Assault on Core American Virtues

During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Representative Gill of Texas delivered a pointed rebuke to Smithsonian Director Anthea Hartig, exposing the institution's latest toolkit that brands such bedrock virtues as politeness, objectivity, a strong work ethic, and the nuclear family as hallmarks of "white supremacy culture," allegedly rooted in European traditions. This is no mere academic folly; it represents the institutional capture of what was meant to be a beacon of American inquiry. Hartig's defense, or lack thereof, underscores a deeper ideological rot: the very European inheritance of leveling ideologies—Marxism foremost among them—has been imported and weaponized against the republic those virtues helped forge. Americans whose forebears fled the rigid hierarchies and class obsessions of the Old World now witness their descendants' hard-won freedoms recast as original sin.

Yet this assault on the American character is itself the fulfillment of a perverse mission. The Smithsonian's founding gift from James Smithson, an English aristocrat, carried with it the Old World's instinct to impose order and deference upon a restless, innovative people carving out liberty in the New World. What Hartig advances is not enlightenment but the vengeful egalitarianism that drove millions across the Atlantic in search of escape. Marxism, with its mindless impulse to flatten every social structure into uniform mediocrity, is no alien creed here; it is the European tradition's dark undercurrent, repackaged for the administrative state. The director thus serves her institutional mandate with fidelity, albeit one hostile to the exceptionalism that elevated America above the very English society that endowed the Smithsonian in the first place.

Normal Americans, heirs to that flight from the Old Country, rightly recoil from this inversion. The values under siege—personal responsibility, rational discourse, familial stability—are precisely what distinguished the American experiment and propelled it to greatness. To equate them with supremacy is to wage war on the republic's soul, substituting resentment for aspiration. In confronting this spectacle, Congress must reclaim the Smithsonian from those who would turn a temple of knowledge into a chapel of self-flagellation. The republic's enduring strength lies not in repudiating its foundations but in defending them against every imported ideology that seeks their dissolution.
