What the evening accomplished was the older work of statecraft: the conversion of personal ease into strategic room. While the toasts spoke of flowers and friendship, the President continued the larger rearrangement of the map—alliances recast, trade made reciprocal, the assumption of American decline quietly retired. The warmth was real enough to be useful. It keeps Beijing invested in a system whose rules Washington is rewriting in real time. Power, when it is practiced at this level, does not shout. It seats the rival at the table, hands him the eagle, and proceeds to redraw the world.
