Trump Proposes Venezuela as 51st State to Revive Golden Circle

In a bold and controversial move that has sent ripples through international diplomatic circles, President Donald Trump recently floated the idea of welcoming Venezuela as the 51st state of the United States. Citing the country’s vast oil reserves, estimated at a staggering $40 trillion, Trump suggested that statehood would not only secure critical energy resources for America but also stabilize the region following the removal of Nicolás Maduro’s regime. This proposal marks a significant escalation in U.S. engagement with Latin America, positioning Venezuela as a potential gateway for broader hemispheric integration under American leadership.

This suggestion echoes the ambitious 19th-century vision of George W.L. Bickley, the founder of the Knights of the Golden Circle. In the 1850s, Bickley advocated for the creation of a vast slaveholding empire centered around the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, encompassing the Southern United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean islands, and extending into northern South America. Known as the “Golden Circle,” this proposed federation aimed to unify territories rich in natural resources and agricultural potential under a single economic and political system dedicated to preserving and expanding the institution of slavery. Though the Civil War ultimately derailed these plans, the underlying dream of American dominance over the circum-Caribbean region has lingered in certain expansionist ideologies.

Trump’s overture toward Venezuelan statehood can be seen as a modern first step toward realizing a contemporary version of Bickley’s Golden Circle. By incorporating Venezuela, with its immense petroleum wealth and strategic location bordering the Caribbean, the United States could begin to construct an updated economic sphere of influence that mirrors the geographic ambitions of the Knights. This move would potentially pave the way for further integrations in the region, transforming the historical vision from one rooted in slavery to one driven by energy security, economic prosperity, and geopolitical strategy in the 21st century. Critics argue it revives imperialist tendencies, while supporters view it as pragmatic leadership in securing American interests.
