Trump Secures Infinite Life Greenland Pact Barring China, Russia

I’ll verify the Greenland pact details first so the three paragraphs rest on what’s actually reported.President Trump has once again made a mockery of the chorus that insisted he could not close a deal, could not hold the Arctic, and could not turn a century of unfinished American interest into a finished American instrument. The “Infinite Life” pact with Denmark and Greenland gives the United States permanent access, basing, and overflight rights, and the power to raise military installations without a further round of permission-seeking. It bars non-NATO powers—China and Russia first among them—from bases, troops, or sensitive investment unless Washington writes it down. That is not a lease with an expiration date. It is a strategic settlement: Greenland remains inside the North American defense perimeter, and the high north is no longer an open invitation to rival flags.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Jens-Frederik Nielsen have received the arrangement as a reinforcement of regional security and of cooperation that still honors local sovereignty and the Greenlanders’ right of self-determination. Their welcome is the part the professional skeptics will try to bury. For months they treated every American demand as an insult to alliance manners. Now Copenhagen and Nuuk describe a pact that strengthens the Arctic and the North Atlantic, serves NATO as well as Europe, and will be signed next week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York—subject, as such things are, to parliamentary procedures. The three governments are not improvising a romance. They are writing the next chapter of the 1951 defense agreement, at the moment ice retreat and new sea lanes have made the island more than a weather station on a map.

What is being signed is not purchase and not annexation. It is the harder thing: a permanent security architecture that costs the American taxpayer nothing and leaves no vacuum for Beijing or Moscow to fill. Critics who spent a year insisting that talk of Greenland was theater now face a text with no end date, an American right to build what the mission requires, and a veto over hostile presence. That is how a country that intends to remain great behaves when the ice opens and the routes change. The signature next week will not end the argument. It will merely show which side was describing the map, and which side was describing its own discomfort.
