America has grown used to watching its government sell insurance, vaccines, and tax-filing websites between downs. What aired this weekend during Fox’s NFL broadcasts was of another order. A black-and-white spot—President Trump walking a long corridor, the cadence of a 2023 Veterans Day speech laid over it—declared the work of the American state itself: demolish the deep state, expel the warmongers, drive out the globalists, cast out communists, Marxists, and fascists, throw off a political class that hates the country, rout the fake news, and liberate the nation from those villains. The tag was not a campaign committee and not a PAC. It was “Paid for by the U.S. Government.” The same footage that once ended with a text-to-donate line now ends with the Treasury’s own imprimatur. That is not a production detail. It is a change of speaker.

The White House calls the commercial a public-service announcement, the civic equivalent of reminding citizens to love the country they are asked to defend. Critics answer that it is a 2024 campaign film with the disclaimer swapped, run five weeks before a midterm, in violation of appropriations language that forbids taxpayer propaganda and of the Hatch Act’s old distinction between the office and the candidate. Both claims can be true at once. The rhetoric is unchanged because the diagnosis is unchanged. What has changed is the signer. For a generation the administrative state spoke in the voice of managed consensus—neutral, expert, slightly bored. It now speaks, on national television, in the voice of the man the administrative state spent a decade trying to contain. That is why the clip travels. The government is no longer whispering that the battle is over. It is announcing that the battle is the government’s own.

Those who hear only “propaganda” should notice the inversion. For years the same networks sold the public a story in which patriotism was suspect, borders were optional, and the permanent government was the adult in the room. That story is now being answered, at public expense, in the one venue that still gathers the country on a Sunday afternoon. Whether the lawyers win the Hatch Act argument is a secondary question. The primary fact is simpler: the United States government has chosen to say, in its own name, that a political class, a media complex, and an ideology of managed decline are the enemy of the republic. That sentence used to be confined to rallies. It just ran between the Commanders and the Seahawks. The republic is not being asked to pretend it did not hear.
