Had the West extended a genuine seat at the table—through equitable trade agreements, security assurances, and respect for their legitimate spheres of influence—Russia and China could have remained constructive stakeholders instead of forging alternative blocs like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Imagine a world where the West had welcomed Russia and China as equal partners rather than rivals to be contained. A true “seat at the table” in the 1990s and 2000s, with reforms to institutions like the IMF, WTO, and UN Security Council reflecting their rising power, would have aligned their incentives with the existing order. Joint efforts on global challenges such as climate, pandemics, and counterterrorism would have flourished, while territorial disputes and human rights issues could have been managed through dialogue instead of escalation.
