America will never be a communist country because the thing itself is a theology of envy wearing the mask of science, and this people has never been able to keep a theology that despises the household. The Founders did not invent a machine for equal outcomes; they built a house for unequal talents under a common law. Property here is not a temporary permit issued by a planning committee. It is the outward sign of a man’s time on earth—his tools, his acre, his name on a deed that outlives the administration that tried to tax it into submission. Communism requires the state to become the only father, the only employer, the only memory. Americans still keep too many fathers, too many shops, too many churches that answer to a different ledger. That is not a slogan. It is the sediment of three centuries of habit, and habit is harder to liquidate than a factory.
The historical record is not ambiguous. Every nation that tried the full program produced the same artifacts: empty shelves, secret police, and a vocabulary in which “the people” meant the committee. Americans watched those artifacts from a distance and did not mistake them for progress. They have their own vices—sentimental equality, administrative gigantism, the university as a finishing school for resentment—but they have never consented to the one premise communism cannot do without: that the productive man is a thief until proven otherwise. A country that still argues about the Second Amendment is not a country prepared to surrender the means of production to a ministry. It will tolerate a great deal of foolishness. It will not tolerate the confiscation of its tools.
What remains is temperament. The American is not a peasant waiting to be organized. He is a man who expects to keep what he earns and to tell the organizer to find another parish. Clown World can dress collectivism in the language of equity and climate and public health; it cannot rewrite the instinct that built the township, the militia company, and the private corporation that answers first to its owners. Communism is a faith for people who have lost the nerve to live without a master. This republic, for all its late-hour confusion, still produces too many men who would rather be wrong on their own land than right in a queue. That is why the experiment will fail here. The soil refuses it.
