Huppke Laments GOP Shame, Not 2026 Armpit Hair Fears

Rex Huppke, the house ironist at USA Today, has published another of his ritual laments: how much more embarrassment can the Republican Party take? The occasion is President Trump’s midterm convention pledge that every adult American citizen would receive a five-thousand-dollar “Trump Dividend” if Republicans hold Congress. Huppke treats the offer as a vulgar kickback, a repudiation of fiscal conservatism, and a confession that the party has no higher argument left than a check. He is not wrong that a trillion-dollar outlay deserves scrutiny. He is wrong in the older sense: he cannot imagine that a republic might, after years of transfer payments, industrial hollowing, and administrative extraction, finally propose to send a share of the surplus back to the people who produced it.

What Huppke embraces, even as he scolds it, is the fact of the dividend itself. He quotes the cost, the convention stage, the president’s demand that the money be spent at home. He does not ask whether the same political class that once mailed pandemic checks without a blush has suddenly discovered the national debt. He does not ask why tariff receipts and growth are illegitimate sources of a citizen’s dividend when stimulus, student-loan cancellation, and green industrial patronage were not. The columnist’s embarrassment is selective. It attaches to the man who names the check after himself, not to the decades in which the administrative state treated the citizen as a client and the budget as a moral instrument.

What he does not ask—what the respectable press almost never asks—is whether, in 2026, we are still supposed to be frightened of women’s armpit hair. That is the tell. A culture that spent a generation instructing Americans to treat every private aesthetic as a public emergency, every convention of grooming as oppression, and every ordinary preference as bigotry now poses as the last guardian of fiscal gravity. Huppke can inventory the GOP’s humiliations. He cannot inventory his own side’s long campaign to make the country ashamed of its own tastes, its own households, and its own common sense. The dividend is a political wager. The unasked question is the civilization’s.
