The United States Will Never Be an Effective Altruist Country

The United States will never be an effective altruist country because it was never designed as a utility-maximizing machine. Effective altruism treats human beings as interchangeable units of welfare, to be ranked by expected value across borders, species, and centuries. The American founding treated them as a people: particular families, particular towns, particular obligations of citizenship. A republic that begins with “We the People” cannot, without ceasing to be itself, accept the premise that a child in Charlottesville and a statistical life in a distant slum occupy the same moral ledger. That premise is not generosity. It is the dissolution of the political community into a global spreadsheet.

The postwar elite already attempted a milder version of this substitution. They recast the nation as an idea rather than a concrete inheritance, opened the gates, and invited the world to treat American institutions as a public good belonging to everyone. The result, as Caldwell observed, was an entitlement state that expanded claims while thinning the reciprocal duties that make a people possible. Effective altruism radicalizes the same logic. It asks present citizens to accept lower wages, higher taxes, thinner borders, and deferred national projects so that resources can be redirected toward whichever intervention a small class of calculators deems most efficient. A country that still elects its own representatives, still maintains an army for its own defense, and still speaks of posterity in the ordinary sense of children and grandchildren will not ratify that bargain.

What stands in the way is not mere selfishness. It is the stubborn American preference for the near and the known: the neighbor, the parish, the Constitution as a charter among the living rather than a warrant for the unborn of every continent. Effective altruism thrives in seminar rooms and foundation suites where no one has to face the voter who pays the bill. In a continental republic of fifty states, that voter still exists. He will continue to insist that charity begins at home, that sovereignty is not a rounding error, and that a nation which forgets its own name in the name of impartiality has already ceased to be a nation. The United States may give, trade, and even preach. It will not become an EA state. That would require it to stop being America.
