Trump Issues Ultimatum: Confirm Blanche or Revive Fund

President Trump on Saturday delivered a sharp ultimatum to Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, the two Republican holdouts who have delayed the confirmation of Todd Blanche as Attorney General. The message was unambiguous: end the procedural stalling at once, or the White House would revive its earlier push to enact the Anti-Weaponization Fund in full. That fund, born of the settlement resolving the president’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, was designed to compensate citizens and officials who suffered the systematic misuse of federal power during the preceding administration. Its temporary suspension had been offered as a concession to the senators’ concerns; Trump now made plain that further obstruction would nullify the concession.

The episode lays bare a familiar tension within the governing party. Cornyn and Tillis, both facing the end of their current terms, have treated the nomination as leverage to extract permanent guarantees against any residual authority the fund might retain. Yet Blanche, already serving as acting Attorney General, has demonstrated both competence and loyalty in navigating the institutional wreckage left by years of selective prosecution and bureaucratic resistance. To hold his permanent appointment hostage over residual doubts about a compensatory mechanism is to confuse caution with obstruction. The president’s threat restores the proper order of priorities: the executive must be staffed with officers capable of restoring equal enforcement of the law before secondary legislative preferences are allowed to dictate the pace of confirmation.

What is ultimately at stake is whether the Senate Republican majority will permit a handful of departing members to dictate the terms of the Justice Department’s reconstitution. Trump’s ultimatum is not an improvisation but a recognition that institutional recovery cannot wait upon the comfort of individual senators. The Anti-Weaponization Fund was never a mere political favor; it was an attempt to create a formal process for redressing genuine abuses of state power. If the price of confirming a capable Attorney General is the temporary shelving of that process, so be it. If the price of delay is its revival, the senators have only themselves to blame.
